THE OFTEN HERD: The Often Herd reach beyond what is expected of a bluegrass band, marrying the wistful, sunshine harmonies of Southern California with the striking industrial allure of their home in the North East of England. They are an engaging and dynamic live act that can seamlessly blend intricate arrangements with exciting moments of spontaneous improvisation.
Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin) are responsible for penning the band’s vibrant and catchy original music. American fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana contribute deft and dynamic instrumental skills that lift the songs to new heights. Their self-titled debut EP features six tracks that represent the variety the quartet can coax from their instruments and voices. Hughes contributes the infectious Cool Summer Rain in addition to the debut single, Debt to the King – a relentlessly energetic track that owes as much to a retro spy film soundtrack as it does to the Stanley Brothers. Davies’ Ruined Road is both nostalgic and vital, blending sensitive troubadour lyricism with an assured backing track.
“A study in virtuosity from a supremely talented group of musicians.” NARC Magazine
“It’s fabulous, really exciting to listen to. Tight, virtuosic and the kind of thing you just know would be even better live!” Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead/Leveret)
