Alice Phelps & Danny Wallington

Alice Phelps and Danny Wallington met through the wonderful Bacon Street musical Sunday sessions. Since then they have been getting a steady jazz and blues repertoire together with Danny on piano and Alice on vocals. Danny is a wonderful stride pianist with beautiful light inflections throughout his playing. Alice is a Multi-instrumentalist usually found to be singing behind the harp, piano or guitar, so enjoy this one off with her just performing vocally.

Alice Phelps: Alice can be found in many London basements, clubs and festivals fronting the New Orleans Trad band the Gator Dog Snappers. With a weekly residency at the Jamboree you can hear Alice exploring the delights of the old jazz repertoire, mainly the likes of Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, always joined by top quality musicians.

She is also a multi-instrumentalist and leader of an ethereal harp centric collective, with music influenced by folk from near and far, Irish to Chinese, Alice blends this with non traditional and blues infused melodies. Creating ambient, lilting, rhythmic harmonies with the harp allowing the bellowing husky vocals to be perfectly contrasted in a very unusual but beautiful way!

Praised by Peter Brook for his ‘creative musicality’, versatile pianist Danny Wallington, has performed in more than fifteen countries over five continents. His invaluable experience with Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and ‘The Suit’ gave him the spotlight at The BAM Harvey Theater in New York, Cidade das Artes Rio de Janeiro, Dadong Arts Centre of Taiwan, and The State Theatre Company of South Australia. Whilst not performing piano concertos, he could be found on the International Jazz Circuit, appearing at venues such as Duc de Lombards in Paris, and Masterpiece in London.

Tonight he will be showing off his blues chops and shuffles inspired by New Orleans’ Dr John. He will be joined by Martina Baldha for the second half.
